IPOH: A man who is accused of impersonating various professionals has pleaded not guilty to cheating a senior citizen of RM24,000 over a non-existent pilot job.
Mohamad Faizul Baharudin, 44, claimed trial when the charge was read to him before magistrate Siti Nora Shariff here yesterday.
He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
According to the charge sheet, the accused had fraudulently induced Latipah Ahmad Sudan, 64, into handing over cash amounting to RM24,000 at a bank ATM in Gunung Rapat here to get a non-existent pilot job between Dec 22, 2016 and April 8, 2018.
The charge sheet also stated that the individual would not have made the payment if she had not been deceived into doing so by the accused.
Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Nuranisah Ismah Muhammad Husaini requested that bail be set at RM10,000.
National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Robert Gnanarajan requested a minimum bail, saying that the accused is married, with five children.
He said the bail amount is to ensure that the accused attends court proceedings.
Siti Nora set bail at RM4,500 and fixed Nov 27 for the next mention date.
Harian Metro reported yesterday that a conman had disguised himself as a pilot, a DPP, a rugby coach and an engineer, among others, to cheat people, with losses involving millions of ringgit since 2001.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Ampang, Selangor, according to Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.
