Cops probe shooting of suspected thief

BATU GAJAH: An unemployed man who was suspected of stealing was shot near an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sumpit Beras, Selama, Perak.

State police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the 32-year-old suffered injuries on his left leg in the 7.50pm incident on Friday.

“The victim is suspected of drug use due to his dazed state upon arrival at the hospital. Once his condition stabilises, he will be questioned by police,” he said after opening the Taman Angkat Amanita 2024 programme at the Pusing Convention Hall here yesterday.

Comm Azizi said police are tracking down the person who fired the shot.

“We want to find out whether the estate owner or a worker is responsible and where exactly the shot was fired.

“Members of the public should not take matters into their own hands, exceeding the bounds of the law.

“The law provides the public with the right to make a citizen’s arrest in the event of a criminal offence and to surrender the suspect to the police for further action. Shooting (someone) is not the right action, and it is a crime,” he added.
