Melaka Chief Minister impressed by Chinese national's grasp of Bahasa Malaysia

MELAKA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) was impressed when a Chinese national answered his question in Bahasa Malaysia after winning a grand prize at a charity event.

Jiang Fei Lin from Guangxi, China, was the winner of an electric scooter at the Neon Walk 4.0, an annual event by the Lions Club of Tanjung Bidara on Saturday (Oct 5) night when she was one of the raffle contestants selected by Ab Rauf.

Jiang eagerly approached the stage when her winning ticket number was announced. Ab Rauf asked her in Bahasa Malaysia, "Cik dari mana di Melaka?" (Which area are you from in Melaka?).

The 38-year-old Jiang then said that she was from China and joined the event to help others.

Later, Jiang added that she has been living in Melaka since last year and is currently dating a local, saying that she has learned some Bahasa Malaysia and is impressed with the local culture and hospitality.

Jiang said she joined the charity walk at the invitation of her friends from China, who run an aesthetics salon in Kota Laksamana, to support cancer patients.

"I am lucky because I signed up for a good cause, and now I've had the pleasure of shaking hands with top state officials," she added.

Ab Rauf took a group photo with Jiang and her friends, commemorating the moment.

Meanwhile, Lions Club of Tanjung Bidara president Gan Tiong Kee said the event is now in its fourth year and added that it has attracted thousands and raised more than RM110,000 which was handed over to the NCSM Melaka chapter.

Similarly, organising committee chair Josephine Tan said the fundraising event's success demonstrates the power of community commitment.

"The increased donations reflect the community's growing awareness and empathy towards cancer fighters," she added.

State government officials like Datuk Rais Yasin and Allex Seah Shoo Shin also attended the event.
