KOTA KINABALU: Three people including a child were killed and two others seriously hurt after an overtaking attempt along the Felda Sabahat 6 road in Lahad Datu on Sunday (Oct 6) evening.

The accident involving a motorcycle, a sedan and a four-wheel-drive (4WD) occurred at 6.05pm, Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail said on Monday (Oct 7).

He said initial investigations found that the motorcyclist, a 55-year-old Indonesian bound for Felda Sahabat from Lahad Datu town, tried to overtake a vehicle.

Unfortunately, he collided with a sedan in the oncoming lane, he added.

ACP Dzulbaharin said the driver of the sedan, a 62-year-old local man ferrying three passengers, lost control of his vehicle and swerved into the other lane, where it collided with the 4WD, driven by a 40-year-old Indonesian man.

He said the motorcyclist and a woman passenger in the sedan died on the spot.

A child in the sedan was pronounced dead while receiving emergency treatment at the Tungku Health Clinic, he added.

ACP Dzulbaharin said the sedan driver and another of his passengers were still being treated for wounds.

The 4WD driver and his passengers sustained minor injuries, he added.

He said blood samples were taken from the victims for tests while investigations continue.

Earlier, Sabah Fire and Rescue Department officials said they received an emergency call about the accident at 6.19pm, and arrived at the scene at 6.31pm.

They reported a total of 13 victims from the crash.
