Ipoh to ‘sell’ doughnut economics to other districts in Perak, says mayor

IPOH: The Ipoh Mayor hopes to expand the Ipoh Doughnut Economic Action Plan to other districts in the state.

Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said by doing so, this would set an example to other cities in Malaysia, as well as in Asia.

He said in line with the goals of Flagship 15 in the Perak Prosperous Plan 2030, the Ipoh City Council would strengthen its commitment to work with all stakeholders to build a resilient, healthy, and sustainable Ipoh.

“Ipoh aims to be a pioneering example for other cities in Malaysia and Asean in adapting a regenerative and sustainable urban development model.

“The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award the city received is an important achievement, but it just does not end there.

“Therefore I plan to expand this action plan to other districts in the state as well,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 8).

It was reported on Monday (Oct 7) that the city had earned international acclaim with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Scroll of Honour Award for the Ipoh Doughnut Economics initiative.

Rumaizi and Ipoh Doughnut Economics City chief executive officer Dr Zulqarnain Mohamad were in Queretaro, Mexico, to accept the award during the World Habitat Day celebration.

The “Doughnut Economy”, so named as it resembles a doughnut, is a model that seeks to balance humanity’s needs with the planet’s ecological boundaries, where societal well-being coexists with environmental sustainability.

Rumaizi urged all parties to work together to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.

“I believe Ipoh is capable of becoming a leader in sustainable development in the region.

“The importance of this achievement lies not only in the award itself, but in the recognition of the shared commitment to transform Ipoh into a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient city,” he added.

Rumaizi said the achievement is proof that cities like Ipoh, when guided by an innovative framework, are able to grow within ecological limits while improving the well-being of their communities.

“We are committed to advancing these efforts, leveraging the principles of the Doughnut Economy, to create a greener and more inclusive future,” he added.
