Fatal wreck: A child was among those killed in the crash in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU: Three people, including a child, were killed while two others were seriously hurt in a crash at Felda Sahabat 6 in Lahad Datu.

The accident involving a motorcycle, a sedan and a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle occurred at around 6.05pm on Sunday, said Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail.

He said based on initial investigations, the motorcyclist, a 55-year-old Indonesian who was headed from Lahad Datu town to Felda Sahabat, had tried to overtake a vehicle in front of him.

However, he failed to do so and collided with the sedan coming from the opposite lane, he said.

The sedan driver, a 62-year-old local man who was with three passengers, lost control of the car and swerved to the opposite lane, colliding with the 4WD.

“The sedan driver was believed to be heading from Felda Sahabat to Lahad Datu town while the 4WD, driven by a 40-year-old Indonesian man, was coming from the Lahad Datu area,” ACP Dzulbaharin said.

The motorcyclist and a woman passenger in the car were killed at the scene. A child who was travelling in the car was pronounced dead at the Tungku health clinic.

ACP Dzulbaharin said the car driver and another passenger are still being treated for bodily wounds.

As for the 4WD driver and passengers, they escaped with minor injuries, he said.

He said blood samples were taken from the victims for chemical and toxicology tests while investigations continued.
