KUALA LUMPUR: Umno reaffirms its dedication to strengthening the party and maintaining good cooperation with other parties in the unity government, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said in a Facebook post on Monday (Oct 7) that unity was crucial for the party’s strength in facing challenges.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman also said this was one of the key issues discussed at the Umno supreme council meeting at Menara Dato’ Onn, World Trade Centre, on Monday evening.
Regarding the upcoming Parliament session on Oct 14, Ahmad Zahid noted that Umno would focus on ensuring the aspirations of the people were met.
"Let us work together to achieve greater success and serve towards that goal," he said.
Ahmad Zahid also expressed his gratitude to everyone who worked diligently during the recent Mahkota by-election, which showcased Umno’s capability to rise and succeed.
On Sept 28, BN successfully retained the Mahkota state seat with a larger majority. Its candidate, Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, won the by-election, defeating Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
Syed Hussien, who is also the Kluang Umno Youth chief, achieved a majority of 20,648 after securing 27,995 votes compared to Mohamad Haizan's 7,347 votes.
Meanwhile, in a separate post on his Facebook and Instagram accounts, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki noted that Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor was sworn in as a member of the Umno supreme council during the meeting.
"This evening marks a historic moment as he (Ramli) becomes the first Orang Asli to be a member of the Umno supreme council, reflecting the party’s commitment to advocating for the rights of all Malaysians, including the Orang Asli.
"Umno will continue to fight for the rights of the Orang Asli community, providing them with opportunities to jointly drive the nation’s progress within the political landscape," he said.
