Task force to rehabilitate kids rescued from GISB


SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has formed a special task force to evaluate rehabilitation programmes for children rescued from Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISB) charity homes.

State Islamic affairs and innovation development committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah and women development and social welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari, in a joint statement, said this initiative follows the decision made by the state executive council on Oct 2.

“The task force aims to implement effective rehabilitation strategies encompassing faith-related issues, welfare, health and mental-physical development, ensuring these children can be reintegrated into society even after the six-month programme.

“Initially, the task force will comprise representatives from the police, Social Welfare Department, State Education Department, Selangor Zakat Board, Selangor Islamic Religious Council, along with child psychology and education experts from MBI and Selgate Foundations,” they said.

The inaugural meeting of this special task force is scheduled for Oct 11, with Mohammad Fahmi and Anfaal serving as co-chairs, Bernama reported.

In early September, the police launched Ops Global, raiding charity homes across Peninsular Malaysia linked to GISB following allegations of child exploitation and religious misconduct.

As a result of these raids, 572 victims were rescued, and 359 GISB followers, including members of the organisation, were arrested.

Meanwhile in KLANG, the Magistrate’s Court has extended the remand order for three GISB employees, including its financial officer.

Their counsel, Rosli Kamarudin, said a woman among them was remanded for one more day, while the other two were remanded for two additional days.

They were remanded over investigations under Section 31(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Magistrate Mohamed Redza Azhar Reza allowed the extension and freed three other people who had been remanded with the trio.

One of those freed was a lawyer who had held a watching brief for GISB.

All six people had been remanded for seven days earlier before being brought to court yesterday.
