KUCHING: Public transport in Kuching is set to be revolutionised when the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme is implemented in 2025.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said 56 new buses would be deployed under the programme, with a total budget of RM79.2mil over five years.
He said the buses would be equipped with modern amenities, including GPS for real-time tracking.
"The buses under this SBST programme will also be prepared for future integration between different transport modes including the autonomous rapid transit (ART), ensuring seamless travel across the network.
"These buses will also be equipped to accept various payment methods, including cash, credit or debit cards and mobile payments," he said at the signing of the SBST agreement between the Federal Government and local bus operator Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd here on Friday (Oct 11).
Also signed was a memorandum of understanding between Biaramas Express and GVT Sdn Bhd for the purchase of buses.
Loke told reporters later that the ministry planned to introduce the SBST programme in every state capital in Malaysia.
"We want to ensure every state capital has efficient stage bus services.
"If we get additional funds from the Federal Government, we also want to implement it in other cities, including Sarawak," he said.
Loke said under the programme, operational costs are paid by the government.
"With SBST, we guarantee payment to the operator. The operator only needs to fulfil their responsibility to run the bus service.
"As long as they operate, they will be paid by the government," he said.
Loke also said the Sarawak Transport Ministry and Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) would determine the SBST service routes to ensure it does not overlap with existing bus services.
He said both authorities would also decide on the fare, adding that it would not be a burden to passengers.
