M’sia welcomes planned US$14.7bil investments by US tech giants, says Anwar

VIENTIANE: Malaysia has welcomed the proposed US$14.7bil investments by US technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, Enovix Corporation, Amazon Web Services, Abbott Laboratories and most recently Boeing.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this during a courtesy call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which took place on the sidelines of the second day of the 44th and 45th Asean Summits and Related Summits on Thursday (Oct 10).

At the same time, Anwar also said Malaysia welcomes the US’ delegation to the next Senior Officials Dialogue in Putrajaya at the end of October as the two countries celebrate its 10th anniversary of the Malaysia-US Comprehensive Partnership.

“Malaysia appreciates the US’ leading role in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2735 and urges the US to use its influence to swiftly implement the resolution,” said Anwar.

Passed on June 10 this year, Resolution 2728 called for an immediate ceasefire of all hostilities in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the US Department of State, in a statement on the courtesy call, said the US supports Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean next year.

US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said the meeting between Anwar and Blinken also underscored the importance of the US-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership at its 10th anniversary and a commitment to strengthening people-to-people, economic and security ties.

According to Miller, there were also discussions between Anwar and Blinken on opportunities to increase cooperation to boost regional stability in support of a free, open, secure, resilient and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

“The Secretary and Prime Minister further emphasised the critical need for a ceasefire, release of all hostages and an urgent influx of humanitarian assistance and launching reconstruction efforts in Gaza,” said Miller.

After the courtesy call, Anwar and Blinken attended a gala dinner hosted by Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his wife in conjunction with the Asean summits.

The 44th and 45th Asean Summit and Related Summits will conclude on Friday (Oct 11) with Laos handing over the Asean chairmanship to Malaysia.
