KUALA LUMPUR: MCA’s 71st annual general meeting (AGM) will see a return to tradition with the attendance of Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the AGM will be marked by the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister as the guest of honour after not having featured any guests over the past few years, owing to Covid-19 restrictions and also internal discussions after the 15th General Election in 2022.
“However, this year marks a (return to) tradition where component parties and friends of Barisan have been invited and have (confirmed) their attendance,” Chong told a press conference at the party headquarters here yesterday.
The AGM will kick off on Oct 19 with the 49th Wanita MCA assembly in the morning, followed by the 60th MCA Youth assembly at 1.30pm, while the main AGM is scheduled for Oct 20.
Chong said there will be 1,733 delegates for the Wanita assembly, 1,033 for the Youth assembly and 2,269 for the central delegates gathering.
He also said the AGM will focus on strategic planning to navigate Malaysia’s evolving political landscape in preparing for the next general election.
Chong announced that delegates will address the party’s direction through resolutions from state-level assemblies and previous general meetings.
“The MCA central committee is set to finalise these resolutions on Monday, Oct 14, when the president (Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong) convenes a meeting to discuss them ahead of the AGM,” he said.
He added that the AGM will cover five categories: party matters, politics, economy, government, and cultural and religious issues.
“Traditionally, each resolution has three to four sub-categories.
“These resolutions are formulated from input collected at the state and division levels and are subject to discussion by the central committee during Monday’s meeting,” he added.
Additionally, MCA has introduced a mobile application to streamline report distribution and facilitate easy registration for all delegates and members.
Chong urged participants to download and update the application to access relevant documents, including resolutions.
