Personal responsibility key to igniting better fire safety, says Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: Fire safety is a shared responsibility that transcends individual roles, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said fire safety is a critical aspect that must be considered when it comes to building design and operations.

“A comprehensive approach is necessary to ensure the safety of occupants and protect the property.

“It is an essential aspect that both individuals and governments should prioritise,” he said.

Lee added that people management is also a crucial aspect towards improving fire safety.

“Good housekeeping, operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment are equally important,” he said.

“With a collective effort that involves every individual, we can improve and enhance fire safety.

“Together, we can ‘ignite’ this fire safety revolution, ensuring a safer, more resilient and empowered present and future community,” he said.

On Friday (Oct 11), The Star reported that more than 300 fire-hazard abatement notices were issued to healthcare facilities such as clinics, care homes and hospitals last year for failing to meet fire safety standards, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.

The facilities include both government and private premises.
