Sabah TYT offers lifeline to struggling UMS student

KOTA KINABALU: Support continues to pour in as Sabah Yang di-Pertua Ngeri, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, steps in to ease the burden of Crisnanalina Jumis, a student from the poverty-stricken northern Pitas district.

In his role as Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Tun Juhar provided Crisnanalina, 20, with a laptop and financial assistance after reports surfaced about her difficulties in continuing her studies at the university.

According to a statement from Istana Seri Kinabalu, Tun Juhar also covered her registration fees, aiming to alleviate some of her financial burdens as she prepares to further her education at UMS.

“This contribution reflects Tun Juhar’s deep concern for Crisnanalina’s welfare, ensuring she has the necessary resources to pursue her studies. As the Chancellor of UMS, the well-being of students, particularly those facing challenges, is close to Tun Juhar’s heart. It is hoped this assistance will ease some of her financial burdens and strengthen her resolve to succeed academically,” the statement read.

Previously, media reports highlighted Crisnanalina’s struggles with paying her registration fees and other expenses, prompting her to seek assistance from various sources to begin her university education. Crisnanalina hails from Kampung Dalamas, Paitan, approximately 240 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu.

In response to her situation, UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor instructed the university’s Student Welfare and Finance Department to assist Crisnanalina with her registration.

Earlier, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud noted that Yayasan Perkasa Siswa (YPS-KPT) provided RM1,000 in initial aid, while Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib contributed RM3,000 to help Crisnanalina continue her studies at UMS.
