S’wak aims to become green energy giant by 2035

KUCHING: Sarawak plans to become a green energy powerhouse by 2035 and will expand its renewable energy capacity to 15GW in the next 10 years.

“This strategic expansion will position Sarawak as a regional powerhouse in green energy, capable of exporting sustainable power to neighbouring countries, including Singapore, Indonesia and beyond,” says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

The state is already leading South-East Asia in clean energy production with its substantial hydropower capacity, he said in his keynote address at the Sarawak Future Forum here yesterday.

Abang Johari said green hydrogen was at the forefront of Sarawak’s clean energy strategy as it was a zero-emission fuel with the potential to decarbonise industries.

He said Sarawak aimed to become a key exporter of hydrogen, particularly to South Korea and Japan in line with their national net-zero strategies.

“Furthermore, Sarawak is developing a robust hydrogen transportation and storage infrastructure, allowing for seamless export to international markets.

“By leveraging its geographical advantage and proximity to key Asian economies, Sarawak can become a major supplier of clean hydrogen, further diversifying its economy,” he said.

The Premier also said Sarawak was transitioning to a green economy to ensure sustainable development while minimising environmental degradation.

He said this shift focused on decoupling economic growth from carbon emissions and resource depletion for long-term economic and ecological resilience.

“Sarawak is laying the groundwork for a future where financial success is aligned with environmental stewardship by integrating renewable energy sources such as hydropower, solar, and biomass,” he said.
