KUALA LUMPUR: Internet service providers should offer affordable packages with faster speeds for Malaysians in the future, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that, based on observations from the implementation of the Point of Presence (PoP) programme, providers could offer plans as low as RM39 per month for 100Mbps.
“Previously, under the PoP initiative, I noticed some providers offering 100Mbps plans for RM49, with others going as low as RM39,” Fahmi said.
He added that with the rollout of the National Digital Network Plan projects, under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and PoP, service providers should consider lowering prices for the public.
“This programme isn’t just commercial but serves a strategic goal. It’s about bridging the physical gap for underserved areas to access high-speed Internet, which also impacts our economy,” he said, after attending the launch of the “Perajurit Broadband” initiative and the memorandum of understanding (MOU) exchange between the Defence Ministry and MCMC yesterday.
Also present was Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
The PoP project aims to narrow the digital divide in rural areas by using schools as hubs for fibre optic broadband infrastructure, providing access to nearby schools, government premises and surrounding residential areas.
In his speech, Fahmi stressed the importance of awareness programmes, such as guidelines for ethical Internet usage, for all Malaysians, including members of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
He also mentioned upcoming digital promotion programmes, including “Cashless Society,” “Digital Health for All,” “MCMC-Microsoft AI Teach,” and “AgriNXT Smart Farming,” which will enhance digital literacy among military personnel.
In collaboration with MCMC, the MAF is also working to improve broadband access through the construction of fibre optic infrastructure at 73 military camps nationwide.
The Fibre to the Home initiative, involving RM99mil in funding, aims to significantly enhance daily activities such as education, communication and overall living conditions for military families.
Earlier, Fahmi and Mohamed witnessed the signing of the MOU by MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman.
To ensure smooth implementation of the project, Fahmi said a joint committee comprising MAF, MCMC, and network providers will be formed to oversee the process and prevent duplication of existing infrastructure.
This initiative is expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.
On the Perajurit Broadband initiative, Fahmi said that the package offers a 100Mbps Internet subscription for as low as RM49 per month.
In his speech, Mohamed Khaled said the cooperation between MCMC and MAF will enhance the quality of life, well-being and welfare of military personnel, particularly those residing in camps.
“With access to information, the learning process will become easier and more affordable. The space and opportunities for generating additional income will be broader,” he said of the initiative that benefits 59,420 units of RKAT.
