PETALING JAYA: The husband of the driver involved in the fatal car crash in Dungun, Terengganu, which led to the death of three university students and left another in critical condition, deeply regrets his wife’s actions.
“From the bottom of my heart and with deepest humility, I sincerely apologise to all the victims’ families and everyone affected by this incident. If possible, I would bow down before all of you to beg for forgiveness on behalf of my wife,” said Azhar Ahmad, 53.
Azhar said he had wanted to apologise to the victims’ families on the night of the accident but was advised by the police and friends to wait until the situation had calmed down.
“I cried and was deeply saddened by the accident,” he said.
He said he only realised his wife was missing from their home after performing evening prayers.
“My son and I were in our rooms performing maghrib prayers, while my wife was in the living room watching television.
“After I finished praying, I came out to find that my wife was not around. I noticed my car was gone and the gate was wide open. I had hidden the car keys but I don’t know how my wife managed to find them,” said the father of three and grandfather of four.
Azhar was preparing to search for his wife when he received a call from a friend who saw his vehicle involved in the accident.
“My son and I rushed to the accident scene. My heart broke when I saw four young men lying there,” he said.
Azhar expressed deep regret over the accident and felt that something was not right with his wife that night.
He said his wife was a kind and loving wife and mother, but had experienced mental health problems 10 years ago after she had an ectopic pregnancy and the baby was aborted.
She was in a coma for four days and had lost a lot of blood, he said.
After regaining consciousness, he said that his wife was not the same, and started hallucinating and talking to herself, reported Utusan Malaysia.
