Number of flood victims drops in Kedah this evening, remains unchanged in Perak, Johor

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood victims in Kedah has dropped as of 4pm on Saturday compared to this morning, whereas the number of affected residents in Perak and Johor remains unchanged.

In KEDAH, state Malaysian Civil Defence Force deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the number of flood victims has decreased to 2,387 people from 718 families compared to 2,952 individuals from 912 families on Saturday (Oct 12) morning.

All victims are being housed at 17 temporary relief centres in four districts namely Kota Setar, Pendang, Kubang Pasu and Pokok Sena.

"In Kota Setar, a total 1,475 people from 440 families are being sheltered in nine PPS, followed by Pendang (507 people from 139 families in two relief centres); Kubang Pasu (205 people from 67 families in two relief centres); and Pokok Sena (200 people from 72 families in four relief centres)," he said in a statement on Saturday.

"Meanwhile, three relief centres which opened in the Baling district this morning have been fully closed after all evacuees were allowed to return to their respective homes.”

In PERAK, the state disaster management committee secretariat said the number of flood victims remains at 136 people from 40 families taking shelter in two relief centres in Kerian.

A total of 71 individuals from 20 families are still being housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Changkat Lobak relief centre whereas there are 65 people from 20 families at the SK Parit Haji Aman, Bagan Serai relief centre. All the evacuees have been at both relief centres for about a week.

"The water levels in the residents' areas have not receded and roads there are still impassable, thus the residents are not yet allowed to return home," said the secretariat.

Meanwhile, in JOHOR, the state disaster management committee chairman,Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said that the number of flood victims remains at 17 people from three families as of 4pm on Saturday, with all the victims being housed at SK Seri Bunut, Batu Pahat relief centres.

"Three areas that are flooded are Kampung Talang Bunut, Kampung Olak Batu and Kampung Parit Nipah Laut in Batu Pahat,” he said in the statement on Saturday.

The statement also said that rain had been reported in the afternoon in seven districts, besides Mersing, Kota Tinggi and Tangkak which were overcast, while a river, Sungai Sembrong in Batu 2 Sembrong (Batu Pahat), was at an alert level.

In the meantime, in PERLIS, the flood situation has fully recovered as the two relief centres operating in Kangar and Arau were closed this evening and earlier Saturday respectively, All evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes. - Bernama
