Popular popiah stall in Melaka shut over hygiene issues


MELAKA: The popular roadside "popiah" stall at Jalan Munshi Abdullah in Melaka has been closed by the state Health Department due to unhygienic practices, including the discovery of rat droppings, says Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem.

The closure order, lasting 14 days, was issued by enforcement officers following an operation on Friday (Oct 11).

Datuk Ngwe, who is the health, human resources and unity committee chairman, stated that 24 eateries were inspected during the operation.

Two other food operators were also closed under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, along with the popiah stall.

The popiah stall violated various regulations under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 and failed to maintain food safety procedures.

A total of 55 notices of compound, amounting to about RM16,000, were issued during the operation.

Regarding the anti-smoking operation, Machap Jaya assemblyman Ngwe mentioned that 1,638 premises were inspected by Friday to ensure compliance with the Smoking Control Act for Public Health 2024 (Act 852), effective from Oct 1.

He added that 42 operations involving 58 enforcement officers were conducted.
