RM1.4mil seized in LHDN raid of smuggling operation in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: Six people were nabbed while RM1.4mil in cash was seized during an integrated operation in the Tawau district.

The crackdown conducted by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and Bukit Aman was to, among others, stop the smuggling of untaxed goods, said Esscom commander Deputy Comm Datuk Victor Sanjos.

He said the arrests of six people - four men and two women - aged between 40 and 47 and the seizure of RM1,412,932 were made following raids conducted on nine premises involving offices and houses in Tawau on Oct 11.

“All detained suspects comprising five locals and a foreigner will be investigated under the Income Tax Act 1967 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA),” he said in a statement, Saturday (Oct 12).

DCP Sanjos said the operation was led by the LHDN while Esscom was there to assist with the police.

It is unclear who these suspects were and what business they were involved in.

“We are committed to protecting the sovereignty of the people in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) and to curb any smuggling activities in this area,” he said.

DCP Sanjos said Esscom would continue to conduct raids and operations like this to prevent criminal activities, and urged the public to share information about any wrongdoings or suspected illegal activities with Esscom.

The Esscom Operations Centre number to call is 089-863181 or via Whatsapp at 011-63311072, he said.
