PETALING JAYA: The artwork of young Malaysian artists should be well documented and showcased more widely to enhance their recognition in the competitive international market, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said local artists often lack exposure and called for the establishment of more art galleries to promote their work.

As an ardent art collector, especially of local pieces, Tengku Zafrul expressed his intention to promote Malaysian artwork to foreign dignitaries visiting the country, as well as during official trips abroad.

“When foreign dignitaries and business groups come to Malaysia, or when we travel overseas, we typically bring souvenirs for them. It would be beneficial to showcase Malaysian artwork in the form of a publication.

“It is essential to document local art along with the stories and narratives behind each piece, so that audiences can understand the artist’s message. This aspect is still lacking,” Tengku Zafrul said after launching an art exhibition and a book titled New Malaysian Paintings at G13 Gallery here yesterday.

The book features the work of 12 contemporary Malaysian artists under the age of 40 and was authored by fine arts curator and academician Badrolhisham Mohamad Tahir.

Tengku Zafrul described the book as a promising step towards documenting Malaysian art and promoting younger artists.

He said such a publication not only gives younger artists a platform to showcase their work but also serves as a unique way to promote Malaysia.

“While more attention often goes to older, established artists, the younger generation is equally talented. I was impressed by the artwork I saw today.

“I’ve known several of these artists for over a decade, and I’ve witnessed their growth in confidence thanks to the support they’ve received from those around them.

“This support is crucial. We will promote this book internationally, along with future publications,” he added.

G13 Gallery owner and director Kenny Teng shared his mission to elevate young local artists both in Malaysia and abroad.

“This ongoing programme is the highlight of the year. As an art collector himself, we are delighted to have Tengku Zafrul endorse and support our programme,” Teng said.

The 12 artists featured in the exhibition and the newly launched book are Anisa Abdullah, Fadilah Karim, Fawwaz Sukri, Gan Tee Sheng, Hisyamuddin Abdullah, Khairudin Zainudin, Najib Bamadhaj, Nik M Shazmie, Shafiq Nordin, Syed Fakaruddin, Wong Ming Hao, and Yuki Tham.
