Failed brakes crash lorry into four cars, two bikes in Batu Pahat

PETALING JAYA: A lorry’s brake failure may have caused it to crash into four cars and two motorcycles at a traffic light intersection in Sri Medan in Batu Pahat, Johor on Sunday (Oct 13).

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said initial investigations found that the incident occurred at 3.47pm when the lorry, driven by a 46-year-old local man, was travelling from Parit Sulong towards Johor Bahru.

However, upon arriving at the location, the lorry’s brakes reportedly failed catastrophically, causing it to collide with the involved vehicles.

"It is confirmed that all the victims involved in the accident did not sustain any injuries.

"Preliminary urine tests on the lorry driver indicated he was free from any drugs.

"However, the lorry driver has been detained for further inspection at the Batu Pahat Puspakom," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

According to him, the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

Upon conviction, the offender shall be punished with a fine of not less than RM4,000 and not more than RM10,000, and may also be imprisoned for a period not exceeding 12 months.
