Masjid India sinkhole investigation in final stages, says FT Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigation into the August sinkhole incident involving Indian tourist G. Vijayalakhsmi is in its final stages, says Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said the findings of the investigation will be presented to the Cabinet.

“We are committed to transparency in any investigations, especially those involving public safety.

“Full investigation findings for the incident in Masjid India and nearby areas are at the final stage and being coordinated by various agencies,” she told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 14).

She also said the deceased's family has received RM30,000 in compensation from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall with an additional RM10,000 in compensation from the private sector.

“This is part of our social responsibility to aid the victim’s family.

“We also do not oppose any attempt by the victim's family to claim compensation from related agencies through legal proceedings,” she said.

She was responding to a question by P. Prabakaran (PH-Batu) who asked for an update on the sinkhole incident at Masjid India.

On Aug 23, Vijayalakhsmi - a tourist from India - went missing after falling into an eight-meter deep hole caused by a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India en route to a nearby temple.

A SAR operation involving security forces and local authorities was launched on the same day.

From the first day of the SAR, the team employed various techniques, including jetting, flushing, and pumping water out of the site to locate the victim.

The operation was called after nine days.
