Speaker reminds MPs Parliament is no-smoking zone

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has reminded MPs that Parliament is a no-smoking zone.

This comes after the Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) was enforced beginning Oct 1 this year, with Parliament being one of the 28 areas designated as no-smoking zones.

However, Johari said the Parliament administration had designated three smoking locations in Parliament.

They are areas in front of the cafeteria at the MPs and administration block, areas next to the Main block and in front of the Multipurpose Hall.

“We hope all MPs and those in Parliament can give their cooperation to this,” he said in his address prior to the start of Parliament here on Monday (Oct 14).

He also issued a reminder that Wednesday is designated as no-sugar day in Parliament.

“This will not only involve Parliament staff but also MPs and is in line with healthy lifestyle campaigns that we must practice together,” he said.

He also said the deadline for all MPs to carry out their mandatory health checks is November 22.

“Congratulations to all those who have already underwent their checks and for those who have yet to do so, I appeal for you to do it,” he said.

“Health checks are very important and will help MPs know of their health status and allow proactive measures to be taken, where needed,” he added.

The current Parliament will sit from Oct 14 to Dec 12 this year.
