Elderly hoarder rescued from ‘house of junk’

Saved in time: An elderly woman was rescued from a house full of garbage and junk by the Civil Defence Force.

GEORGE TOWN: Family members of an 86-year-old woman had to call the Civil Defence Force for help to “rescue” an elderly woman from a house full of garbage and junk.

Its northeast district officer Muhammad Aizat Abdul Ghani was reported as saying that the woman was unable to walk and had difficulty leaving the double-storey house at Jalan Mano, off Jalan Bagan Jermal here, due to the large amount of rubbish and recyclable materials that she had amassed over the years.

Following the call at around 4.40pm on Sunday, a four-man team was sent to the scene where the personnel were greeted with bundles of garbage piled around the house compound and even inside the house.

Wearing face masks, they worked to remove the woman, who is believed to be suffering from various ailments, including hypertension, diabetes, physical frailty and hearing impairment.

She was later carried out of the house on a stretcher.

It is believed that the woman needed help to move to an old folks’ home nearby.
