PETALING JAYA: Several Kuala Lumpur locations are experiencing flooding due to heavy rains earlier in the day.

The entrance to Universiti Malaya near its law faculty in Lingkungan Budi is one such area, with water levels reaching nearly waist-high.

In Brickfields, SK St Theresa Brickfields 1 - located near the Klang River - has also been impacted.

Homes in a residential area in Section 6, Wangsa Maju, have been flooded by overflowing water.

Kuala Lumpur advisory board member Andre Lai said the floodwater appears to be originating from Bukit Dinding, which borders the affected neighbourhood.

"Kuala Lumpur City Hall is currently clearing the debris and uprooted trees in response to the emergency," he added.

It has also been reported that several roads en route to Parliament are submerged. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has called for Parliament proceedings to be temporarily halted due to MPs being trapped by the flooding.

Residents have taken to Facebook to voice their frustrations about the floods.

Some blame the flooding on poor maintenance of the SMART Tunnel, a federal project designed to reduce flooding in Kuala Lumpur's city centre.

"The issue lies with the upkeep and the public's littering habits. Without changes, flooding will continue regardless of our drainage system's sophistication," said a Facebook user by the name of "Nusaybah".

Another Facebook user - "Baharuddin Bin Shafie" - said that the authorities should swiftly update the public on the flood status and the roads that have been affected.
