PUTRAJAYA: The public is reminded to prioritise electrical and gas safety during flood season because of various risks such as fallen electrical poles, broken power lines, and damage to equipment.
The Energy Commission said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 16) that precautions should be taken before, during, and even after a flood.
It emphasised that if evacuation is required, those affected should ensure electrical equipment is stored in high places safe from floodwaters and that the main switch on the electrical distribution board is turned off.
Separately connected electrical installations, such as solar photovoltaic systems or electric fences, should also be shut off at the mains, along with piped gas valves.
The commission said valves of gas cylinders should also be shut.
During a flood, avoid areas with electrical installations or submerged electrical equipment, such as substations and switch rooms, and refrain from touching poles or structures that conduct electricity, it added.
The commission also said no one is to try and move fallen electrical poles or severed wires, and report any instances to the utility provider immediately.
It said that after a flood, keep the main electrical board and gas valve switches off before beginning clean-up work.
Before turning the main switch back on, it reminded users to ensure that any electrical equipment is dry and in good condition.
It also urged caution when cleaning up near power lines, electrical installations and piped gas systems.
The commission also said electrical and gas-powered equipment should not be used if there are any doubts about their integrity.
It advised the public to keep emergency contact numbers handy, such as those of nearby police and fire stations, hospitals and utility companies. – Bernama
