PETALING JAYA: Malaysians intending to visit Thailand for a short break during the coming Deepavali public holiday have been advised to be on the alert.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told Malaysians, especially those going to southern Thailand, to keep updated with the latest developments.
"I believe that many Malaysians will travel to southern Thailand during the upcoming Deepavali holiday.
"Besides urging them to be more cautious, I would also like to advise Malaysian tourists to, if possible, avoid areas that may be targeted by those (responsible for) attacks," he was quoted as saying in various reports on Wednesday (Oct 16).
He said travellers should always stay informed about the situation in any country they plan to visit.
"They should get the latest information before planning a holiday there," he said.
On June 30, a homemade bomb hidden in a vehicle parked outside a building in Yala’s Bannang Sata district in southern Thailand near the Malaysian border exploded, killing a woman and injuring 18 people.
On March 22, attackers set fire to shops, cars and utility poles in at least 40 locations across the southern part of Thailand.
The area is a tourist hotspot for Malaysians, with nearly 100,000 travelling there during the four-day long weekend in September.
