Coastal flooding from high tide hits Sabak Bernam

SABAK BERNAM - High tides have led to flooding in coastal areas, gardens, and roads in the Sabak Bernam district on Thursday (Oct 17) morning.

Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Selangor Northern Zone 7 chief Samsol Maarif Saibani said that monitoring from 4am identified five locations impacted by the overflow.

The locations affected include Bagan Sungai Besar, the coastline near Bagan Nakhoda Omar, Batu 23 Sungai Nibong recreational area, Sekinchan, and Bagan Sekinchan.

"In Bagan Sungai Besar, seawater flowed from near Lorong 5 into drainage ditches. At Bagan Nakhoda Omar, tide waters spilled over into residential gardens," he said in a statement reported by Sinar Harian on Thursday.

He said the entire recreational area at Batu 23 Sungai Nibong in Sekinchan was submerged.

"Today's high sea levels caused flooding across roads, spilling into shops in Sekinchan. In Bagan Sekinchan, residential lanes were also inundated," he added.

Samsol said certain water gates experienced overflow onto roads, including those at the Sungai Haji Dorani resort, Sungai Pulai, the Sungai Burung gate, and the site of the Sungai Air Tawar - Hutan Melintang Bridge project.

"Further overflows occurred at Water Gate 6 Sekinchan, New Baroh Ditch Gate, Sungai Nipah Gate, Beting Kepah Gate, and several areas along Sungai Lang," he added.

He added that the high tide situation was under control and had receded by approximately 6am on Thursday.

Samsol said another high tide is expected around 4pm, continuing into Friday (Oct 18).

"The sea levels on Friday are forecast to rise, potentially reaching a height of 5.8 meters," he added.
