KLANG: While the Selangor authorities fear the effects of the king tide phenomenon, fisherman Adnan Buhari is taking it easy.
“We have prepared for the northeast monsoon that will happen from November to March and so there isn’t a need for any special arrangements for the king tide,’’ he said.
Adnan, who is the headman of the Kampung Batu 4 fishing village in Kapar near here, said one of the main things to do is to lengthen the chain attached to the anchor which moors the boats.
“If the chain is not lengthened, the boats will be under water when the high tide hits, but with a longer chain, the boats will rise with the water,’’ he explained.
Pulau Ketam Residents Association chairman Datuk Cha Keng Lee said that, being an islander, he is used to high tides.
“We have prepared our village over the decades and the king tide cannot do much damage as even our streets are made of concrete,’’ he added.
Cha said waters are expected to rise and flood the streets of the island tomorrow but it is also likely to recede fast.
Selangor Disaster Management Unit principal assistant secretary Mohd Ikram Rahimi said the state had completed preparations for the northeast monsoon ages ago and this will also be the buffer to counter any untoward incidents during Friday’s super high tide.
“We are also monitoring the sea and river banks and carrying out the necessary measures.
“In addition, water pumps to draw out water in case of excessive flooding have also been mobilised throughout all coastal districts,’’ said Mohd Ikram adding that the coastlines of Kuala Selangor, Klang and Kuala Langat are expected to face the brunt of the king tide.
