Johor Zoo to undergo further upgrades

JOHOR BARU: With Johor Zoo already proven to be a success in attracting local and foreign visitors since its reopening on Aug 31, plans are underway to ensure the oldest zoo in Malaysia continues to be a crowd puller in the city.

The zoo recorded more than 300,000 visitors within the first one-and-a-half months.

State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the zoo would be undergoing a second phase development soon.

“We are looking at kickstarting the Johor Zoo second phase development plan within the first quarter of 2025. However, the zoo will not be closed.

“Paperwork for the second phase development is still being finalised but it will mostly cover upgrading works within and around the zoo,” he said when contacted.

Mohd Jafni, who is also Bukit Permai assemblyman, added that the upgrade would involve installing CCTVs and speakers.

“This move is to ensure the safety of both visitors and animals,” he said, adding that the upgrading works would include new fences at some animal enclosures.

He said the second phase would make the zoo more OKU-friendly and easier for parents with young children to use strollers inside the zoo.
