GEORGE TOWN: Police have seized drugs worth RM115,000 following the arrest of five suspects in Penang.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the suspects, comprising two men and three women, were arrested after four raids were conducted simultaneously in Penang from 4pm on Tuesday (Oct 15) to 5am on Wednesday (Oct 16).

"The suspects are locals aged 24 to 36 years old who were involved in trafficking marijuana.

"They were arrested at a parking lot in George Town.

"Also seized from them was a bag containing 35 packs of marijuana weighing 20.1kg worth RM65,960," said Hamzah in a statement on Thursday (Oct 17).

He added that police then raided a house in Ayer Itam and seized a bag containing dried plants with 1.5kg of marijuana worth RM18,640 in it, as well as nine slabs of marijuana weighing 4.6kg worth RM30,400.

"Investigations found that the syndicate has been active since the middle of this year for the local market.

"Urine tests found three suspects to be positive of methamphetamine while two of them have past drug offences," he said.

Hamzah said a motorcycle worth RM5,000 was also seized.

All suspects have been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
