Budget 2025: RM87mil to combat smuggling, cartels


PETALING JAYA: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, Customs Department (Customs) and Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) has been given total allocations amounting to RM87mil to beef up enforcement to combat smuggling and cartel dominance.

In his Budget 2025 speech, it was announced that the ministry and Customs will receive RM60mil whereas MyCC will be given an allocation of RM27mil.

"From 2022 to September 2024, the ministry and Customs succeeded in cracking down on smuggling syndicates with seizures reaching almost RM2bil," said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Budget 2025 speech.

He also added that as of September 2024, MyCC had succeeded in breaking the wall of cartel dominance and bid fraud involving a total penalty of nearly RM600mil involving more than 350 companies.
