KUALA LUMPUR: Beware of any service claiming to recover funds for scam victims, says Bukit Aman.
Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said police have detected a purported "legal service" for victims of online scams on TikTok.
"It (says it can) recover the funds lost by the victims.
"I stress that any offer claiming to ensure the return of lost funds for scam victims is in fact another scam," he said when contacted on Friday (Oct 18).
Comm Ramli said there is a legal process that must be followed for the return of lost funds in scam cases.
"This process is initiated by an investigating officer.
"There are no shortcuts, be it through agents, NGOs, or others," he said.
He reminded the public not to fall for such offers.
"If you do believe and opt (for it), it will be 'out of the frying pan, into the fire'," he said.
On another matter, Comm Ramli said 18 police reports have been received since last month about a gold sale scam that allegedly led to over RM7mil in losses.
"It is said to be masterminded by a woman in Jitra, Kedah.
"The suspect would sell gold below market price, RM150 to RM200 per gram.
"Those interested have to wait several weeks before acquiring the gold.
"Initially, victims received the gold, leading them to trust the offer," he said.
However, since July, buyers have not received the gold they purchased and the suspect could not be reached, he said.
Comm Ramli said police are looking for one Siti Hajartul Haini Abd Hamid, 37, from Jitra, to assist with the investigation.
"We urge those with information to contact investigating officer Insp Mohd Zulhakimi Ab Hamid at 014-5390552 or Insp Low Pei Yi at 012-5381907," he added.
