Man-eater captured in Jeli after two vicious attacks

IPOH: A tiger suspected of fatally mauling two individuals in Bersia, Gerik, and Batu Melintang, Jeli, Kelantan, has been successfully captured by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) on Saturday (Oct 19).

Perak Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff confirmed the capture of the man-eater, which entered a trap set by Perhilitan.

"Yes, it was caught near Jeli. Kelantan Perhilitan will provide further information regarding this capture," he said when contacted on Saturday (Oct 19).

Yusoff had mentioned previously that his department was collaborating with Kelantan Perhilitan to capture the tiger suspected of mauling two victims on the Jalan Raya Timur Barat (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli earlier in the week.

The first attack occurred on Tuesday (Oct 15) when a local man, Adnan Ismail, 54, was killed by a tiger while heading to an outdoor toilet in a forest area at KM79.2 JRTB Gerik-Jeli in Bersia. His mauled body was discovered approximately 100m from the workers' quarters.

On Oct 17, reports emerged of a Myanmar man being killed, with his left thigh severed, believed to have been attacked by the same tiger the previous night behind a house on a chilli farm at Batu 18, JRTB Gerik-Jeli near Batu Melintang in Jeli. His lifeless body was found 300m away.

Photos and videos of the capture of the tiger, a critically endangered species in Malaysia, have gone viral on social media. – Bernama
