TAPAH: An allocation of RM2.5mil is needed for a short-term solution for traffic congestion problems here, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The Deputy Public Works Minister said for there are two possible ways to obtain the allocation.

"We are trying this year (for the approval of RM2.5mil), there are two methods, one is through Marris (Malaysian Road Record Information System) which we are working with the state government and the other is (other) allocations that have any surplus," he said at a press conference here on Saturday (Oct 19).

Earlier, he inspected the new traffic dispersal system implemented in Tapah before attending a briefing on the development of the issue at the Batang Padang district Public Works Department (JKR) office.

Also present was Perak infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

Ahmad said the solution for the interim would work after all parties agree on the changes to be implemented.

"Whether it is smart traffic lights, to turn off traffic lights, make repairs... my commitment and the state (JKR) director's is to find RM2.5mil for it, " he said.

On a long-term plan to build a 200m-long bypass at a cost of RM17mil to solve the problem based on the state JKR's proposal, Ahmad said he wanted it re-examined.

"The bypass is only 200m and the cost seems high," he said.

The Public Works Ministry had announced on Aug 23 that a one-way road system in place in Tapah, with two traffic lights closed to facilitate traffic flow. – Bernama
