Government should consider teachers' welfare in placements, says backbencher

KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has called on the Education Ministry to show more consideration in the posting of teachers.

Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS-Igan) appealed to the ministry to understand the hardship of teachers who face separations from their families due to transfers away from their hometowns.

"The ministry needs to find effective solutions and should not only focus on operational requirements but also empathise with the teachers' personal situations.

When a requested location is unavailable, alternatives such as second or third choices or even nearby states should be explored," he said in the Supply Bill 2025 debate on Monday (Oct 21).

He added that such arrangements would enable teachers to return home quickly if needed.

"Transfers for teachers in long-distance marriages should be given priority. The ministry must devise a strategy to reduce such cases," he added.

Ahmad Johnie also suggested that teachers should be allowed to serve in schools within their own communities.

"It's time for the Education Ministry to resolve this matter once and for all," he said.
