PETALING JAYA: A total of 152 illegal street racers detained by the police at Jalan Tun Razak were brought to perform the congregational Dawn prayer and were given a religious talk.

All of the individuals, aged between 15 and 24, were arrested during an “Op Samseng Jalanan” operation carried out by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department starting from 1pm on Saturday (Oct 19).

According to Sinar Harian, its Chief, Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the operation, which was conducted in stages until 5am, resulted in the seizure of 68 motorcycles after inspecting 152 motorcycles. The remaining motorcycles were issued summonses.

He said that in the operation, 152 people were brought to the department’s KL office and issued summonses, while the seized motorcycles will undergo further inspection by the Road Transport Department and the Department of Environment in the near future.

"All of them were also brought to perform the congregational Dawn prayer and received a religious talk focused on raising awareness about the dangers of illegal street racing, as well as personal safety and the safety of other road users.

"The religious talk was delivered by Asst Supt Zamri Basiran and Inspector Abdullah Hafiz from the KL Enforcement Unit," he told the daily on Monday (Oct 21).

He added that this religious and educational approach for the youth is hoped to help guide the nation's future generation towards displaying good morals in society.

He advised parents to pay more attention to educating their children and to become companions with whom they can share their experiences and problems.

"Parents are also encouraged to ensure that their children are not given too much freedom to go out late at night without reasonable cause, especially young girls.

"Indirectly, this can reduce their involvement in activities that violate traffic laws," he said.

He emphasised that the department continually conducts operations involving various vehicles, including motorcycles, and there will be no compromise for street gang-related offences to ensure the safety of other road users. Actions will be taken under the Road Transport Act 1987.

"The common offences are illegal street racing and racing against each other, as well as modifying motorcycles, including changing tyres and exhausts," he said.
