Social Work Profession Bill delayed, says Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR: The tabling of the Social Work Profession Bill in Dewan Rakyat this year has run into another delay again, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said that the Bill was expected to be tabled in Dewan Rakyat next year.

"We are facing some technical issues, everybody wants to be included in it.

"We wanted to have it this year but we could not. Not this year. Discussions are still in progress." she said after the launch of the National Social Policy (DSN 2030) at the KL World Trade Centre here.

Drafting of the Social Work Profession Bill commenced in 2010 and was tipped to be tabled in Dewan Rakyat this year.

The Social Work Profession Bill is expected to protect beneficiaries as it would ensure social workers adhere to the highest professional standards of social work.

For the public, the Bill aims to create awareness of what beneficiaries and clients of social workers are entitled to and enable the public to recognise professional social workers when they seek their assistance.

The Bill is also meant to state clearly the professional standards as well as the consequences of non-compliance and ensuring public safety.
