Govt to continue monitoring domestic violence issues despite slight drop in cases, says Dr Noraini

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The government will continue to address domestic violence issues despite a slight drop in reported cases this year, says Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

The Women, Family, and Community Development deputy minister said that a total of 442 cases have been recorded up to August this year, compared to 577 cases last year.

“Despite the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act 1994 and various government initiatives, many survivors of domestic violence, along with their children, still face difficulties in accessing the necessary resources and support.

“Beyond domestic violence, other key issues like child neglect, mental health, marriage, and divorce also require greater attention.

"This is why efforts from both the government and the community must come together to ensure that women and families across Malaysia receive the support they need to thrive,” she said.

She said this when met after officiating the Women, Family, and Community Empowerment Convention (Komentar 2024) at the Educity Sports Complex on Tuesday (Oct 22).

Noraini added that stronger interventions are needed; in Johor alone, the Registered Counsellor Volunteers (SKB) had addressed 21,074 cases involving children, adults, people with disabilities (OKU), and the elderly during crisis situations.

“This includes counselling sessions for couples, families, and groups,” she added.

More to come.
