Ipoh's crime rates decreasing, say state police


IPOH: Ipoh has recorded a decrease in crime cases, according to state police.

Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Zulkafli Sariaat said that from Jan 1 to Sept 30 this year, a total of 1,626 cases were recorded compared to 1,708 cases in the same period last year.

"The statistics show that Ipoh remains a safe city, not only in terms of crime but also in public safety and public order (ketenteraman awam)," he said.

DCP Zulkafli also said that the city was an ideal attraction for Visit Perak Year 2024 as it was a safe and popular destination for tourists.

"There were no crime cases involving foreign tourists reported between January 2023 to September 2023 and the same period this year," he said at the at the Tourist Safety Townhall at on Tuesday (Oct 22).

Moreover, he added that Ipoh police headquarters is commited to reducing crime rates in the district, especially in the tourist hotspots, he added.

"The Ipoh police headquarters has a special tourist police unit dedicated to patrolling areas frequently visited by tourists.

"We want Ipoh to be a safe tourist destination," he said.

He also called on the public to contribute to the success of the state’s tourism industry.

“Tourism cannot solely rely on law enforcement as the tourists will also look at how they are treated by the local community—whether in terms of hospitality, cleanliness, or the behavior of taxi drivers,” he said.
