More than 500 Sabahans complete cultural preservation training programme

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 551 participants have successfully completed an eight-month training programme aimed at equipping them with the skills and knowledge to preserve and enrich Sabah's cultural heritage.

The Special Programme for Natives of Sabah offered a comprehensive approach, focusing on skills training and entrepreneurship development.

Participants were trained in various crafts, preparing them to thrive in the competitive market.

“These talented individuals, many from the B40 income group, have gained essential skills and knowledge that empower them to not only protect but also enhance Sabah's cultural tapestry,” said Yayasan Sabah Group director Datuk Seri Gulamhaidar Khan Bahadar in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 22).

With this foundation, he added that the participants are well-positioned to succeed in the handicraft market, unlocking significant economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.

The training programme was conducted at three locations - the Sabah Handicrafts Centre in Keningau, Kolej Teknologi Yayasan Sabah (KTYS), and University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF), ensuring participants received diverse expertise.

A special appreciation ceremony will be held on Thursday (Oct 24) at the Sabah Handicrafts Centre to mark their successful completion.

“The programme is a strategic investment in Sabah’s future. It aims to uplift individuals from the B40 group by equipping them with skills to participate in the gig economy. This approach helps foster a new generation of entrepreneurs and artisans who can invigorate the local economy and transition out of the B40 category,” Gulamhaidar said.

In celebration of Sabah’s cultural heritage, the Sabah Handicrafts Centre will also host the Craft Fiesta from Oct 24 to 27.

The event will feature various activities, including a fashion show by local talents, interactive workshops, and family-friendly games.

Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Datuk Kitingan, is expected to launch the event.

“Through our continued dedication to nurturing local talent and craftsmanship, Yayasan Sabah Group remains committed to uplifting local artisans and fostering equitable economic prosperity in Sabah,” Gulamhaidar added.
