SEA Games 2027: RM700mil budget to be shared by Putrajaya and private sector, says Yeoh

KUALA LUMPUR: The estimated RM700mil cost for hosting the SEA Games in 2027 will be jointly shared between the government and the private sector, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the Sarawak state government had committed RM365mil for this, with the Penang government committing RM15mil.

Yeoh added that the Sabah state government initially agreed to allocate RM100,528,975 for the SEA Games but later pulled out due to a lack of facilities.

“The Ministry will also carry out further discussions with the private sectors and corporate bodies to get sponsorship in terms of cash and kind,” she said in a written reply on Tuesday (Oct 22).

Yeoh said the ministry was also of the view that the SEA Games and Para Asean 2027 Games, which will be held in Malaysia, can be carried out in a prudent, minimalist and smaller scale manner.

“The Ministry is also in the process of forming an Organising Committee and SEA Games 2027 secretariat through discussions with the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Paralympic Council of Malaysia as well as related ministries and state governments,” she said.

Yeoh was responding to a question by Chow Kon Yeow (PH-Batu Kawan) who asked about SEA Games 2027 preparations.
