Former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Norhizam to make political return with Bersatu

MELAKA: Former DAP Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee has joined Bersatu and will now be returning to the political scene by contesting in the coming party polls.

He said he will be contesting for posts in Bersatu's Hang Tuah Jaya division.

"Now, who can defend the fate of the Malay people, the Malay race, which party? That's the party we will go to.

"Our Malay spirit is certainly there; that's why we left DAP. We are now free and then we enter a party (Bersatu); let no one say we jumped; there is no term for jumping," he said when met at Baitul Tariq, Klebang, on Tuesday (Oct 22) night.

Additionally, he is keeping the date he joined the party a secret, describing it as 'hush-hush.'

"When it comes to being a member, that's hush-hush; I can't tell you just yet, wait for Nov 2," he added.

Norhizam was previously a member of Umno but left the party to join DAP in 2006 and successfully won the Pengkalan Batu state seat in 2018 under the DAP ticket.

Following the Sheraton Move in 2020, he left DAP to become an independent supporting the state government led by Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.

In October 2021, Norhizam joined former Melaka Chief Minister Umno's Idris Haron in withdrawing support for the then-state government led by Sulaiman Md Ali from Umno, leading to the Melaka State Elections (PRN).

He then contested as an independent candidate but failed to retain his seat, garnering only 1,218 votes.
