KUALA LUMPUR: Collections from Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP), issued to Singapore vehicles entering Malaysia, are expected to exceed RM100mil this year, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the amount collected from the VEP last year came up to RM91,037,040mil.
“With the expected increase in vehicles from Singapore entering Johor this year, I estimate that the collection would surpass RM100mil,” Loke said.Talks will be held with the Finance Ministry on how to improve public transport in Johor with the revenue generated from the VEP, he said in reply to a supplementary question from Tan Hong Pin (PH-Bakri) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Loke said the revenue collected by the government is channelled into the Consolidated Fund.
“Of the RM20 collected from each VEP, RM5 is given back to the Johor government.
“We will negotiate with the Finance Ministry for the VEP collection to be channelled for public transport purposes in Johor.”
The funds could be used to increase bus routes in Johor following the completion of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link connecting Johor Baru and Singapore, he said.
It has been reported that the RTS had reached 83% completion as of July and is on track to start operations on Jan 1, 2027.
Earlier, Loke informed the House that 89,818 trips involving various vehicles had crossed over from Johor to Singapore as of last month.
He said these vehicles had passed through the Causeway and Second Link.
Of this, he said 31,194 were cars, 53,000 motorcycles, 3,531 commercial buses and 2,093 commercial lorries.
On the other hand, Loke said there were 4,397,229 vehicles from Singapore entering Johor from the two entry points as of last month.
