Sabah Fire Department warns against water activities during monsoon

KOTA KINABALU: The public has been warned by the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department to refrain from sea and water-related activities due to the ongoing rainy season.

Acting director Farhan Sufyan Borhan said the caution comes amid a yellow alert for continuous rain across Sabah, urging residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to be vigilant.

"We need to be prepared for the weather changes that could lead to floods, falling trees, and other emergencies," he said in a statement.

Farhan added that in the last five days, the department has received 33 calls regarding fallen trees from a range of districts.

These include Kota Belud, Tuaran, Putatan, Penampang, Kunak, Papar, Keningau, and Kota Kinabalu, as well as Tambunan, Sandakan, Beluran, Tawau, Kudat, and Kuala Penyu.

He mentioned that there have been no reports of serious injuries or fatalities due to these incidents.

"With the rainy season upon us, the Fire Department, in collaboration with other agencies, is fully prepared to handle any eventualities," he said.

A yellow alert for continuous rain has been announced by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) affecting parts of Sabah, including the west coast and the state's capital, Kota Kinabalu.

The alert spans from Wednesday (Oct 23) to Friday (Oct 25) and includes inland areas of Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau, and Tambunan, the West Coast, Sandakan (Beluran), Kudat, and the Federal Territory of Labuan. This advisory was issued at 9.45am on Monday (Oct 21).
