University student arrested for allegedly defrauding NGOs

ALOR SETAR: The police have arrested a university student who allegedly deceived 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals of donations amounting to approximately RM200,000 over the past two years.

Kubang Pasu OCPD Supt Rodzi Abu Hassan confirmed that the suspect was detained at 3pm on Wednesday (Oct 23) at his home, and the student will be brought to the Jitra Court on Thursday (Oct 24) for a remand application, as reported by Sinar Harian.

"The case has been classified under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said.

Seberang Perai Welfare Organisation representative Eng Hiap Boo, in a press conference on Wednesday, said it was estimated that the suspect had cheated more than 20 NGOs of almost RM200,000.

"Many did not want to come forward and lodge a police report against this individual because they did not care or were ashamed because some of the individuals who were deceived have the titles of Tan Sri and Datuk Seri.

"But in this case, we need to act so that this fraud can be stopped as soon as possible," he said.
