Malaysia is dedicated to promoting bilingualism among students, says education minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry continues to strive to nurture bilingualism among students through its Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening Command of English (MBMMBI) policy, says Fadhlina Sidek.

The Education Minister said the policy is part of the government’s efforts to produce a competitive generation with a global outlook yet still adheres firmly to the nation’s culture and roots.

“In the context of the national education transformation, this policy is in line with a goal of 21st-century education that emphasises bilingual skills - an important aspect to ensure our students can communicate well at the international level without forgetting their national identity,” she said in her opening speech for the 2024 National Level MBMMBI Carnival at the Bahasa Melayu (BM) Campus, Institute of Teacher Education Malaysia (IPGM)on Thursday (Oct 24).

She stressed that while BM continues to be our national identity, a strong command of English is not only a career advantage but also opens the door to knowledge and global networks.

The MBMMBI carnival was held at the BM Campus for two days until Friday (Oct 25), and an estimated 1,500 participants participated.

This year, the carnival was carried out with the concept of both languages moving forward hand in hand, with neither given more priority over the other.

“In an increasingly complex world, the role of language becomes more important.

“Therefore, this carnival becomes a platform for us to sow the spirit of love for language, knowledge, and culture that will remain as a legacy for future generations,” she added.
