Rely on official weather reports, not social media, says Civil Defence

PETALING JAYA: The public is advised to obtain weather forecast information from authoritative sources, including the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

According to Sinar Harian, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force Pahang Director, Colonel Che Adam A Rahman, said this is in response to individuals who are 'overly smart' in interpreting weather forecast analyses through social media recently, which has caused public concern.

He said that the individuals involved are believed to have previously made weather forecast comments using certain applications that were shared on social media a few years ago.

"We do not know who these individuals are or where they come from, but we find they did the same thing a few years ago. The dissemination of inaccurate weather information by unauthorised parties must be stopped, as it causes public anxiety," he said.

Che Adam said that, as is well known, the latest weather developments, especially concerning Tropical Storm Trami currently active in the South China Sea, have been handled by MetMalaysia through verified notifications shared with the public.

Based on these developments, MetMalaysia has issued a Continuous Rain Warning (alert) for Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, expected to occur this Friday (Oct 25).

Previously, a video of a weather forecast analysis by an individual went viral on the TikTok application, warning Kuantan residents to be cautious as the district is also expected to be affected by Tropical Storm Trami this Friday.

According to the individual's claims, storms and heavy rain could occur between 5pm and 8pm or even earlier.

He alleged that the severe weather is also expected to affect several other areas, including Lepar and Pekan on the same date.
