Retargeting RON95 subsidy not 'shock therapy', Nik Nazmi tells Syed Saddiq

PETALING JAYA; The retargeting of the RON95 subsidy is not "shock therapy", Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad says in reply to Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, who is also PKR vice-president, said that 85% of Malaysian households will still receive subsidies.

"The government has been publicly talking about doing this for some time.

"It takes place with wage increases in public and private sectors as well as an increased social safety net," he said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), on Thursday (Oct 24).

Syed Saddiq had, on Wednesday (Oct 23), said the government should stop using tactics to shock the people with announcements of policies that are not yet fully thought through

The former Muda president in his debate on the Supply Bill 2025 once again responded to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli who countered his initial arguments based on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Budget 2025 speech last Friday (Oct 18).

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, announced that targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol would be implemented by mid-2025, but assured that 85% of the population would continue to receive the subsidies.

Under Budget 2025, those under the T15 category are no longer eligible for health, education and fuel subsidies.

Rafizi explained that the definition of T15 would be based on net disposable income and locality.
