U-turn project in Melaka can halve traffic congestion, says state exco member

MELAKA: Traffic congestion is expected to be reduced by half with the elevated U-turn and direct U-turn from the Pulau Gadong Intersection to the Cheng Perdana Intersection.

Melaka public works, infrastructure, public amenities, and transport committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the project's approval was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Budget 2025.

"It will involve the main route on the Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ), which has the highest volume of vehicles especially during peak hours.

"Once the U-turns are in place, there will be no more traffic lights, which will prevent congestion," he said in an interview during the 'Apa Khabar YB' radio programme produced by MelakaFM here on Thursday (Oct 24).

Hameed also said the state government had previously implemented a 'no right turn' initiative to facilitate smoother traffic flow, especially during peak hours. However, the construction of the elevated U-turn and direct U-turn is seen as more effective.

He added that the state government had previously requested the construction of four elevated U-turn and direct U-turn projects across Melaka.

"The Public Works Department, as the responsible agency, will continue to submit applications to the federal government for the approval of three similar projects at the Lebuh Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh (SPA), Lebuh Ayer Keroh, and Lebuh AMJ," he said. – Bernama
